Catholic Rock Art of the Rio Grande Gorge
One of the least studied rock art traditions in New Mexico—relative to its abundance—is the Catholic rock art tradition. Crosses pecked, scratched and painted on boulders are part of a much larger Catholic tradition of marking the landscape that includes the construction of roadside descansos and the erection of wooden crosses on hills and mesatops.
